Description
Inspired by the MFIT exhibition Fashion Unraveled and organized by MFIT and the Fashion Research Network, this one-day colloquium explored the concepts of memory, wear, and imperfection in fashion. Speakers focused on imperfect garments and the significance of dressing as a habitual, intimate, and ephemeral act.
William DeGregorio is a conservation technician at the Museum of the City of New York and a PhD candidate at the Bard Graduate Center, where he is working to complete a dissertation on the foundation of museum costume collections in New York City in the interwar period. He has worked on exhibitions and contributed to publications including Stephen Burrows: When Fashion Danced (2013) and Mod New York: Fashion Takes A Trip (2018) at MCNY, and Elegance in an Age of Crisis: Fashions of the 1930s (2014) at FIT. While focusing materially on costume of the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries, his academic research concerns the relationship between fashion and museums, exploring the roles of collectors, dealers, and curators in shaping public collections, and exhibitions as sites of shifting epistemological discourse.
