- Description
- The Museum at FIT presented Pink, its twentieth academic symposium. This symposium explored the significance of the color pink in fashion, art, and culture. Pink provokes exceptionally strong feelings of both attraction and repulsion, yet it is increasingly being regarded as cool and androgynous, powerful and political. Topics included the significance of pink clothing in western and non-western cultures (including India, Africa, Mexico, and Japan), the role of pink in eighteenth-century portraiture, associations of pink with politics, gender, and sexuality, and the use of pink in cinema.
- Elena Romero is an adjunct assistant professor in Advertising and Marketing Communications at FIT. She has written on fashion, music, and culture for Women's Wear Daily, Latina, Vibe, the New York Post, and Sportswear International, and she is the author of Free Stylin': How Hip Hop Changed the Fashion Industry.
- Monica L. Miller is a professor of English and Africana studies at Barnard College. A specialist in African American and Afro-diasporic literature and cultural studies, she is the author of Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. She is currently at work on a new project titled Blackness, Swedish Style: Race, Diaspora, and Belonging.
