Join an exciting 45-minute conversation on gender conceptions, gender change, masculinity, and more in the world of ancient Egypt and Mesopotamia and their modern presentation in museums with Edward Bleiberg, curator emeritus of Egyptian art at the Brooklyn Museum, and Omar N’Shea of the University of Malta.

Edward Bleiberg (PhD, University of Toronto) joined the Brooklyn Museum in 1998 from the University of Memphis, Institute of Egyptian Art and Archaeology, where he had been director and associate professor. A Pittsburgh native, he graduated from Haverford College in Pennsylvania in 1973, and is the author of several books and articles on the ancient Egyptian economy, Egyptian coffins, and the Jewish minority in ancient Egypt and ancient Rome. At the Brooklyn Museum, he reinstalled the Egyptian collection twice and organized seven exhibitions, five of which traveled in the United States and the Republic of Korea. He retired from the museum in 2020. He currently teaches at Hunter College.

Omar N’Shea (PhD, University of Malta) is the director of the International School for Foundation Studies at the University of Malta. He is also the coordinator of the humanities and social sciences programs. His main research interests and teaching portfolio include the textual and visual expressions of gender in general, and masculinities in particular, in the cuneiform cultures of ancient Iraq. He is currently working on a book on masculinities in the state arts of the Assyrian empire. He is also working on a biography of a Neolithic burial site in Malta through fieldwork and archival research.
