Description
In this virtual World Affairs Lecture, Rania Matar will be in conversation with Dr. Souzeina Mushtaq, assistant professor of Communication and Media Studies at University of Wisconsin–River Falls, on the topic of “From the Individual to the Collective: A Search for Identity.”
Rania Matar has dedicated her photographic practice to exploring deeply personal narratives, drawing upon her multifaceted cultural background and cross-cultural experiences as a Lebanese-born Palestinian-American artist and mother. Her work explores issues of individual and collective identity, often through photographs of girls and women in the United States and the Middle East. Working in collaboration with her subjects to create intimate, often emotionally charged portraits, her work highlights transcendent human experiences and emphasizes underlying similarities rather than apparent differences. In doing so, her work provides insight into the complexity of women’s inner lives and relationships. An accomplished artist, Matar was the recipient of a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2018.
The Department of Social Sciences’ World Affairs Lecture Series fulfills FIT’s mission to foster an understanding of diverse cultures and politics within the international as well as domestic perspectives. It also embraces, supports, and expands upon the president’s campuswide initiative on civility.
