Title
Byron Lars in Conversation with Valerie Steele
Description
Fashion designer Byron Lars is beloved by celebrity A-listers, including Natalie Portman and Taylor Swift, and by notable figures such as Michelle Obama for his style “mash-ups,” which is an integral part of his design DNA. Lars and MFIT’s Director and Chief Curator Dr. Valerie Steele discuss his career, which started in 1991 with a small collection of sportswear focusing on what he referred to as “twisted American classics.” In 2020, Lars partnered with longtime colleague Sheila Gray to found IN EARNEST, a newly established iteration of the firmly established clothing brand. By definition, the new name means “occurring to a greater extent or more intensely than before,” so it makes sense that “IN EARNEST” is also the brand’s credo.
